A Clinical Study of Colorectal Cancer


Abstract
This paper is a clinical analysis and review of 236 cases of colon and rectal cancer that were admitted to Seoul National University Hospital from Jan. 1964 to Dec. 1973. The results are as follow:
1. Male outnumbered female by the ratio of 1.8: 1 and age incidence was most prevalent in the 6th decades, comprising 31% of cases.
2. Location-of tumor was¢¥ most frequent in rectum (62), sigmoid colon (11%) being next.
3. Most frequent symptom was melena (53%), followed by bowel habit change (46%) and pain (36%).
4. Symptom duration was 3 month in 19% of cases and 13 to 24 months in 17% of cases.
5. The tumors were Dukes¢¥ stage A in 3% of cases stage B, 36%, stage C, 24% and stage D, 37%.
6. Miles operation was most frequent operation used (24%). Colostomy was performed in 27% of cases and biopsy only in 3%
7. Complication developed in 31% of cases, wound infection being most common (19%). Operative mortality was 4%.
8. Dietary habit of patients was not specific.
